  1. AI tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and Firefly make artwork for screens, not for print. The files usually arrive with us too small, in the wrong colour mode, and with no bleed. The good news: with the right prompt and a proper artwork check, AI designs can print beautifully. Here's how.

    More and more of the artwork landing in our inbox at Furnival Press started life in an AI tool. Event flyers, banner designs, programme covers, poster concepts. Someone typed a prompt, got something that looked brilliant on screen, and sent it straight over to print.

    We love that people are creating. What we don't love is being the ones who have to say: this file won't print well. So rather than keep having that conversation one customer at a time, we've written the guide. Everything below is what we'd tell you over the phone.

    1. Why does so much AI artwork look the same?

      You've probably noticed it. The glossy finish, the dramatic lighting, the perfect symmetry, the slightly airbrushed sheen over everything. People can now spot AI-generated artwork in about a second, and once they've clocked it, they tend to switch off.

      There's a simple reason for it. AI image tools are trained to produce what most people find pleasing, and "pleasing on average" turns out to be a very narrow style. If you give the tool a vague prompt, you get the average. The same average your competitor gets. That's why so many AI event posters, banners and flyers are starting to blur into one.

      For an events company, that matters. If your exhibition graphic at ExCeL London or Olympia looks like every other AI-generated backdrop in the hall, you've spent money to be invisible.

      How do you stop AI artwork looking like AI artwork?

      Direct the tool instead of decorating with it. The trick is to be specific about what you want, and just as specific about what you don't want. A few rules that genuinely work:

      1. Prompt for direction, not vibes. "Make it look amazing" gets you the AI average. "A poster with muted colours, real paper texture and generous white space" gets you something with character

      2. Ban the cliches by name. Add a line to your prompt like: no glowing edges, no lens flares, no sparks, no over-rendered gloss, no dramatic rim lighting. It works surprisingly well.

      3. Ask for imperfection. Subtle film grain, natural texture, restrained styling. The things that make an image feel real are exactly the things AI leaves out by default.

      4. Change one thing at a time. If you rewrite the whole prompt every attempt, you'll never learn what's working. Keep the prompt steady and adjust one element per go.

      5. Never let AI generate your logo or small text. It will get close, and close is worse than wrong, because you won't spot it until 500 copies come off the press. Always place your real logo file and set real text over the top.

    1. Why do AI files cause problems at the printers?

      This is the part almost nobody tells you before you hit generate. AI image tools build files for screens. Print is a different world, and the gap catches people out in four ways:

      Resolution. Most AI tools output images around 1024 to 2048 pixels across. On your phone, crisp. Stretched across a roller banner or an A1 poster, a blurry mess. As a rough guide, small-format print (flyers, programmes, booklets) wants 300dpi at the finished size, and large format wants at least 100 to 150dpi at full size. An A5 flyer alone needs roughly 1800 x 2500 pixels, which is more than many AI tools give you by default.

      Colour. AI tools generate in RGB, the colour system screens use. Printing presses use CMYK. RGB can display vivid neons and electric blues that physically cannot be reproduced in ink, so an unconverted file often prints duller than what you approved on screen. Nobody's done anything wrong; it's just two different colour systems.

    1. Bleed. Print gets trimmed after it's run, and no cutter is accurate to the pixel. Artwork needs to extend 3mm beyond the finished edge (that's bleed) or you risk white slivers along the edges. AI tools don't add bleed. Ever. And because AI images are generated as one flat picture, you can't just stretch the edges without stretching the whole design.

      Text and detail near the edges. AI compositions love putting things right at the border. In print, anything important needs to sit at least 3 to 5mm inside the trim edge, or it can get clipped.

      None of this is a reason to avoid AI. It's a reason to prompt properly, and to have a human check the file before it runs.

    1. The prompts: copy, paste, and adapt

      Here are three prompts we've written for the three ways we print. Swap in your own sizes and content. They won't make a file perfectly print-ready on their own, because no prompt can guarantee true CMYK or genuine 300dpi, but they'll get you 80% of the way there and save everyone a headache.

      For digital print (flyers, programmes, booklets, menus):

      "Design an A5 portrait flyer. Document size 154 x 216mm, which is the finished size of 148 x 210mm plus 3mm bleed on all sides. Extend all backgrounds and colours to the full document edge. Keep all text, logos and important content at least 5mm inside the finished trim edge. Design at 300dpi at final size. Use a print-safe colour palette suitable for CMYK and avoid neon and ultra-saturated screen colours. Do not show any guides, crop marks or bleed lines on the artwork. No glowing edges, lens flares or over-rendered effects. Leave clear space where I will place my own logo and text."


      For litho print (larger runs: programmes, brochures, stationery):

      Use the digital prompt above, plus: "This will be printed litho in CMYK. Avoid very heavy solid ink coverage across large areas, avoid relying on subtle colour gradients that may band in print, and use no more than two or three strong colours. Keep fine detail bold enough to hold up on press."


      For large format (roller banners, feather flags, backdrops, photo walls):


      "Design artwork for a roller banner, finished size 850 x 2000mm. Work at 100dpi minimum at full size. The file needs to be genuinely large, not a small image scaled up. Keep all text and logos in the top two-thirds and at least 50mm from every edge. Extend background colour and imagery beyond the edges. Simple, bold and readable from five metres away; this is not a leaflet. Print-safe CMYK-friendly colours, no neons. No guides or marks visible on the artwork."


      One honest warning: even with a perfect prompt, always check what the tool actually gives you. AI is confident, not accurate. That's where we come in.

      What Furnival Press does with AI artwork


      Every single job that comes through our door, AI-generated or not, gets a manual artwork check by a real person before anything goes to print. That's been our way of working long before AI arrived. We've been checking work and catching problems since 1862.

      When AI artwork lands with us, here's what happens. We check the resolution against the size you actually want to print. We check the colours and flag anything that won't reproduce in ink the way it looks on your screen. We check bleed, trim and safe zones. And if something's not right, we tell you straight and help fix it: upscaling, adjusting, rebuilding the bleed, setting your real logo and text properly. Most of the time that's simply part of the service. If a file needs serious rebuilding, we'll tell you before we start, not after.

      And here's our promise, the same one we've always made: we will never print something that doesn't print well. If it's going to disappoint you on the day, it doesn't go on the press. Simple as that.
